Helping Youth of Divorce Feel Supported
"Divorce can be tough for kids and parents, but you're not alone. We're here to help."
What Is The Divorce Group at allcove Beach Cities?
allcove Beach Cities is offering a support group for youth ages 12-18 who have parents who are divorced or planning to become divorced. There will be a group for parents at the same time in another room. The group meets weekly at the same time for 8 weeks, and the same people (usually 8-10 people) attend each meeting. It provides a safe, welcoming opportunity for participants to connect with peers who share similar experiences, process their feelings, and learn healthy coping strategies. The group is facilitated by licensed professionals and trained volunteers who are experienced in divorce, life transitions and loss.
WHEN:
Beginning Thursday, February 6, from 4-5:30 for 8 consecutive weeks.
WHO:
Youth ages 12-18 and their parents/guardians
A couple of things for prospective participants to know about the group:
Discussions within the group are private and respectful. The group is a judgment-free zone where everyone is valued. Members will meet others their age who understand what they are going through.
The group is facilitated by trained professionals who offer tools to handle emotions, improve communication, and build resilience. And activities may include sharing circles, art therapy, role-playing, and interactive discussions.
Common Misconceptions About Divorce, Grief, and Support Groups
Misconception: "Divorce doesn’t affect teens as much as younger kids."
Reality: Teens often face unique pressures, such as juggling loyalty to both parents, adapting to blended families, or feeling responsible for siblings.
Misconception: "Support groups are only for people who are struggling."
Reality: Groups provide support for anyone experiencing change or uncertainty—not just those who feel overwhelmed.
Misconception: "Talking about divorce will make me feel worse."
Reality: Openly discussing emotions can provide relief and help teens realize they’re not alone.
Misconception: "Only families with major conflict need support."
Reality: Even amicable divorces can leave teens with lingering questions and emotions.
What might you get out of joining this group?
Emotional support, connection with others who get it, life skills that support this ongoing family shift, improved relationships between parents and their teens, and increased resilience and skills that can positively influence teen mental well-being into adulthood.
